How Can I Prevent Water Damage?

Water damage comes in all shapes and sizes and can begin wrecking its havoc multiple places around the home/building. Let’s begin with places water damage can start INSIDE the home.

  • Dishwasher
  • Washing machine
  • Pipes
  • Garbage disposal
  • Refrigerator

Dishwasher: Because the dishwasher runs gallons of water around and around frequently, it’s prone to leakage. Be aware of dampness, warping, or softening within the flooring around the dishwasher.

Washing Machine: Like the dishwasher, the washing machine houses gallons of water very frequently as there are ALWAYS clothes to wash. Every so often, check behind the washing machine where the hoses are attached. Check for anything that might need tightening on both ends of the hoses. Scan for any dampness, warping, or softening in the flooring surrounding the washing machine.

Pipes: Because pipes mainly reside in the walls, it’s a bit harder to check on them to check for leaks. However, there are still ways to halt water damage to a degree! During the winter months, be sure to turn outside water sources off. We know that as water expands, it freezes. This is true inside pipes, as well. When the water has no more room to expand, it simply bursts through the pipe and continues as it pleases. This causes some not-so-fun flooding experiences, especially in homes with basements. Another way to aid in pipe “antifreeze” is to leave the thermostat to a comfortable temperature. If leaving for extended periods of time, specifically in the winter, keep inside doors and cupboards open to allow for even heat distribution throughout the home.

Garbage Disposal: This cause of water damage is a nasty one! It’s often caused by a slow leak that usually goes undetected until the smell of rotting food seeps through the cracks of the cupboard door. Check under the sink for any sign of leakage often. This includes warping, dampness, and a less-than-pleasant smell.

Refrigerator: just like all appliances check for signs of water damage around the base. If it has a water line in the back for the ice machine, make sure it’s attached properly and that the water is flowing to the correct place.

For water damage that occurs OUTSIDE the home, there aren’t as many culprits. The main two include:

  • Gutters
  • Roof

Gutters: Blocked gutters result in flooded gutters, which results in standing water. In the water damage restoration world, standing water is the enemy. It is a catalyst for microorganism growth, and material decay. Be sure to clean out gutters at least twice a year to prevent blockage and flooding.

Roof: Examine your roof a few times a year as maintenance. Patch any missing shingles and be sure that any cracks or crevices are sealed and protected from inclement weather.
